Born in a family of rich musical tradition dating back one hundred and frifty years. Pandit Dr. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay is among the best exponents of Khayal in the country. Born in February 21, 1927, today he is one of the senior most Khayalists still performing at the top of their form.
A disciplined yet creative elaboration of the Ragas, aesthetic and tuneful voice technique, extreme clarity and unmatched precision of taankari and underlying sense of rhythm, absence of gimmickry and generally a matured synthesis of celebration and emotive content in his music have given the form of Khayal a new dimension, contemporary in presentation and traditional in analysis.
The senior most vocalist of the day and an outstanding figure in the world of Indian classical music. His music has remained unimpaired by age and he is not only a performing artiste but a man devoted to his art as a music-guru, mystic and musicologist.
An extremely cultured person otherwise, he did M.A in Bengali literature in the year 1948and later PhD from Aesthetics of Music from Rabindra Bharati University , 1968. His PhD. Thesis 'Sangeeter Shilpa Darshan' was published as a book. Since then he has continued in research in this field of music.
At 85, he is still resplendent with his music genius and has been performing uninterruptedly for an unbelievable span of time – a rare feat, never achieved before by any vocalist in the history of Indian classical music.
Since 1950s Pandit Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay has remained an established and highly esteemed artiste. He is a 'top' grade performer of AIR and Doordarshan. He has been performing at all the major music festivals in the country and has travelled to America and Europe to perform and lecture on Indian classical music.

Pt. Amiya Ranjan Bandyopadhyay is one of the founding fathers and was the Head of the dept. of Vocal Music in Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He retired as a professor of Music after 30 years of dedicated teaching and continues to guide music aspirants in his residence. He had also acted as a visiting Professor in Viswa Bharati University.
Many of his students have earned a name and reputation for themselves as vocalists of the day. His son, Santanu Bandyopadhyay is one of the innovative young vocalists of the country. Others include acclaimed musicians like his brother Nihar Ranjan Bandyopadhyay, a very renowned artist in the field of classical music, his students like Sri. Dillip Karmakar, Manojit Mallick, Uma Mitra, Kavita Gupta, Nandini Chakraborty to name a few.
He has re-defined the style and aesthetics of his school of music and renovated the art of Khayal singing with new and innovative techniques, nuances and idioms in music.
